USPS Redeems Itself
Or, maybe I over-reacted… just a smidge.
At any rate, it seems the postal gods were doubly good to me. First, my bizarre experience at the local post office (see this post), did not result in my passport winding up in Guam. Or Uzbekistan. Or some dude’s lunchbox.
I’m happy to report that my new passport and old passport safely arrived in my hot little hands! I thought I would have to permanently surrender the old one–which contains sentimental stamps from places like Turkey and the English Channel Tunnel stamp, which to someone like me (who is deathly afraid of underwater tunnels) signifies a small act of bravery on my part. The thought of never seeing these mementos again was somewhat disheartening. But apparently, you get to keep your old passport. They just punch holes through it and send it back to you. I thought this was rather kind, especially since the holes were not punched directly through my face.
I considered myself overwhelmingly blessed to receive the passports, when Lo & Behold– the postal gods delivered yet another gift:

Complimentary copies of The Sun (September’s issue, in which my little essay appears in the Readers Write section). I’ve been reading The Sun for about ten years and it’s a true honor to be included, particularly in such a provocative, well-respected journal. Aside from the copies, there was a thank-you note and other generous goodies.
So… I must humbly admit that while my experience at the post office was downright kooky, USPS (as a whole) is still doing a darn fine job. Way to go guys! Three gold stars for you. And my apologies for the “going postal” remark. That was a tad snippy. Whoops.
* * *
Oh. It has just occurred to me that while I’ve spent ample time griping about intelligently discussing passport issues, I haven’t said where I’m going. Hmmm… Perhaps I shall be especially cruel and save that info for another post. Eeee-Hee-hee-hee-he! {A devious, witchy-type laugh.}
Here’s a hint: I’m listening to Mozart’s symphony No.41 (”Jupiter”). But the symphony isn’t as significant as the composer. Any guesses?

I’m so glad your passport came intact and on time for your trip to…Vienna? I was really frightened when I renewed my passport recently and had to mail in my old one. But it came back in a very timely fashion!
Congratulations on the essay publication! I find it’s especially gratifying to have a piece appear in a publication you’ve been reading for a long time.
And…thank you so much for your lovely comment on my blog post. Your praise is even more meaningful because I respect your writing so much
I was going to spill your secret, but Becca beat me to it. And you are quite the funny writer. Even if you are a little postal.
All kidding aside, you are a true inspiration. Thanks for lifting us up with your humor, accomplishments and generous heart.
Congratulations on the Sun piece! I’m inspired by the care and patience you’ve taken with building your (very admirable) writer’s resume. Well done.
I was going to guess Vienna, too. How exciting! I hope you have a fabulous time. And oh, how I love love love the Jupiter symphony!
Huge congratulations re: the Sun piece! You are going places, my friend, in more ways than one.
Becca, you are one smart cookie! Vienna is absolutely correct! I had a feeling that the musicians who read this blog would quickly figure it out.
Thanks so much for what you said about my writing. I think we have a mutual admiration thing going on when it comes to that!
What a sweet comment, Angie. You’re quite skilled at humor yourself.
I’m glad you feel this blog is place to get some inspiration, since that’s exactly how I feel about your blog too!
Hey, Laura– So good to hear from you, friend! Thanks for your wonderful comment about the Sun. One step at a time, eh?
Thomma Lyn– Yay! Your guess about Vienna is right. Very smart! I don’t leave for a few weeks, but I couldn’t be any more excited if I were leaving tomorrow. Thanks for the comment about “going places.” Oh, you are SO clever!
